The Titanic - Walter & Mahala Douglas
George was the only one of the original five Douglas brothers to leave Canada. He moved to Illinois a few years after he arrived in Canada, and later to Iowa. George was a partner in Douglas & Stuart, the predecessor company to the American Cereals Company which eventually became the Quaker Oats Company. George's son Walter was born in Iowa in 1861. Walter became quite a successful business man and prominent citizen of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He and his brother George started the Douglas Starch Company in Cedar Rapids. He later started the Midland Linseed Oil Company in Minneapolis. Walter had several business connections in Canada including:

  • Canadian Elevator Company
  • Monarch Lumber Company
  • Saskatchewan Valley Land Company
  • Empire Elevator Company, Fort William, Ontario
Walter had two sons, Edward and George, by his first wife Lulu (Camp) who died in 1899.

Walter was on the Titanic with his second wife Mahala (Dutton) and their maid Miss Bertha LeRoy when it sank in the Atlantic Ocean April 14th, 1912. Walter and the maid died. Click here to see Titanic Online site.
