| George was the only one
of the original five Douglas brothers to leave Canada. He moved to Illinois
a few years after he arrived in Canada, and later to Iowa. George was a
partner in Douglas & Stuart, the predecessor company to the American
Cereals Company which eventually became the Quaker Oats Company. Click

George's son Walter was born in Iowa in 1861. Walter became quite a successful business man and prominent citizen of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He and his brother George started the Douglas Starch Company in Cedar Rapids. He later started the Midland Linseed Oil Company in Minneapolis. Walter was on the Titanic with his second wife Mahala (Dutton) and their maid Miss Bertha LeRoy when it sank in the Atlantic Ocean April 14th, 1912. Walter and the maid died.
